On Sunday, the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv was rocked by a series of missile and drone assaults launched by Russia, resulting in the death of at least one individual and injuring 13 others, according to Ukrainian officials. These attacks followed Ukraine’s recent strikes on Russian logistics centers and storage facilities.
Residents of Kyiv were alerted by air-raid sirens moments before explosions echoed throughout the city, targeting six districts. The Solomianskyi district saw damage to an apartment complex, while fires were reported at a supermarket and a residential building in the Sviatoshynskyi district. Additional impacts were felt in the Dniprovskyi district, where a shopping and entertainment center was hit, and the Shevchenkivskyi district, which sustained damage to an apartment building. A non-residential site was also affected.
Further casualties were reported in the central Dnipropetrovsk region, where a Russian drone attack claimed another life. Meanwhile, Russian authorities noted one fatality in the Kursk region due to a Ukrainian strike.
The escalation comes in the wake of Ukrainian drone operations targeting areas in Russia’s Moscow and Tambov regions, focusing on logistics hubs connected to the supply of drone components and navigation equipment. In recent months, Ukraine has increased its long-range strikes on Russian soil, aiming at infrastructure and energy sites in retaliation for ongoing Russian bombardments since the conflict’s onset in 2022.
Domestically, Ukraine is navigating political unrest following a shake-up in its government. Protests have emerged in various cities, with thousands taking to the streets for a third consecutive day in response to the dismissal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. This development has fueled speculation regarding potential broader changes within the nation’s military hierarchy.
