Spain’s Visa-Free Policy Boosts Economic Ties with Eight African Nations

Starting in 2026, Spain will allow citizens from eight African nations to travel visa-free with ordinary passports, granting stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. This initiative is anticipated to foster increased tourism, business interactions, and cultural exchanges between Europe and Africa, benefiting both regions through enhanced connectivity.

The countries benefiting from this visa exemption include Botswana, Cabo Verde, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mauritius, Namibia, Rwanda, and Seychelles. Travelers from these nations will be able to visit Spain for short-term purposes such as tourism, business activities, or family visits without going through the visa application process.

Despite the ease of travel, visitors must still fulfill standard entry requirements. This includes possessing a valid passport and, if necessary, demonstrating proof of accommodation, sufficient financial means, and having a return or onward ticket. The exemption strictly covers short stays and does not extend to employment, long-term education, or permanent relocation, for which appropriate visas or residence permits are still required.

South Africa, however, is not part of this new arrangement. Consequently, South African passport holders must continue to obtain a Schengen visa for short visits to Spain and other countries within the Schengen Area, maintaining the status quo for travel from South Africa to these European destinations.
