Pea Hummus Offers Nutritious Boost, Expands Market for Versatile Meal Enhancers

For those aiming to boost their protein and fiber intake with minimal effort, green pea hummus offers a straightforward homemade solution. This creamy dip is crafted by blending boiled chickpeas and green peas with a mix of herbs, spices, and healthy fats, providing a nutritious alternative to typical condiments like ketchup or mayonnaise.

Each serving of green pea hummus delivers approximately 12–13 grams of protein, along with an array of fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Its smooth texture complements a wide variety of dishes, from wraps and sandwiches to traditional foods like dosa and paratha, making it a versatile addition to any meal.

To prepare this delightful hummus, you’ll need a cup each of boiled chickpeas and steamed green peas, a tablespoon of sesame seeds, and a handful each of coriander and mint leaves. Add to that 1–2 green chillies, a garlic clove, ½ teaspoon of cumin powder, salt to taste, the juice of half a lemon, a tablespoon of olive oil, and 2–3 ice cubes. Begin by steaming the green peas for about 7–8 minutes until tender.

Next, combine the steamed peas and boiled chickpeas in a blender with the other ingredients: coriander, mint, sesame seeds, green chillies, garlic, cumin powder, salt, lemon juice, olive oil, and ice cubes. Blend until the mixture is smooth and creamy, adding a little water if necessary to reach the desired consistency. Once blended, transfer the hummus to a serving bowl, drizzle with olive oil, and garnish with red chilli powder, pomegranate seeds, or a few whole chickpeas for added flair.

This green pea hummus can be enjoyed as a spread or dip with your everyday meals. It pairs wonderfully with sandwiches, wraps, frankies, dosa, and parathas, or serves as a fresh vegetable dip. While green peas on their own are not a complete protein source due to their lower levels of certain essential amino acids, they can easily be combined with other protein-rich foods to contribute to a balanced diet. This recipe offers a delicious way to elevate the nutritional value of your meals without the sense of restriction typically associated with “healthy” eating.
