South Africa has once again cemented its position as a premier destination for nature and safari tourism, recently being named the second-best location worldwide for wildlife holidays in a new international survey. Conducted across 12 countries with participation from 2,400 travelers, the survey revealed that a significant 72% of participants prioritize wildlife experiences when selecting their holiday destinations. This trend is mirrored in online behavior, as global searches for “wildlife holidays” have surged by 211% over the past year.
In this survey, South Africa was positioned just behind Australia, which took the top spot. Notably, South Africa outshone other renowned wildlife destinations such as Kenya, Canada, and China. The country’s allure lies in its diverse ecosystems and abundant biodiversity, offering tourists a wide array of experiences. Visitors can enjoy everything from the iconic Big Five safaris to whale watching, birding adventures, and unique encounters with African penguins.
The growing popularity of wildlife holidays reflects a broader shift in travel preferences, as more tourists seek immersive and authentic nature experiences over traditional sightseeing tours. This trend indicates a rising desire among travelers to connect more deeply with the natural world during their vacations, opting for experiences that offer a closer look at wildlife and their habitats.
Highlighting the interests of global travelers, the survey identified the giant panda as the most sought-after animal to observe in the wild. Following closely in popularity are elephants, kangaroos, koalas, and whales. Within the celebrated African Big Five, the elephant was notable for being the only member to rank within the global top five favorite animals, underscoring its universal appeal among wildlife enthusiasts.
