The Kremlin has signaled an indefinite postponement of a potential Trump-Putin summit, stating Tuesday there is “no precise timeframe” for such a meeting.
This comes after President Trump announced last week, following a call with Putin, that a summit would take place in Budapest within two weeks.
A US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, mirrored the Kremlin’s message. The official confirmed “no plans” for a meeting in the “immediate future.”
The official did confirm a “productive” call took place on Monday between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to discuss the summit.
However, the official added that a follow-up in-person meeting between the diplomats was “not necessary.” This abrupt change comes after Putin’s August visit to Alaska and amid Trump’s boasts of being able to end the Ukraine war.
