Zimbabwe is witnessing the return of over 60,000 of its nationals from South Africa, as efforts intensify to facilitate their reintegration into society. Official statistics reveal that 11,065 individuals were repatriated through the collaborative initiatives of both South African and Zimbabwean authorities, while an additional 47,703 chose to return of their own accord. Among those repatriated were 2,449 adult men, 2,407 adult women, and 4,955 minors, underscoring the diverse demographic of the returnees.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has called upon families and communities to extend a warm welcome to these returnees. He emphasized that the government has put in place a range of comprehensive measures to ensure their reintegration is conducted in a safe, dignified, and seamless manner. This initiative aims not only to support the individuals returning but also to foster community cohesion as they reintegrate into their home country.
In addition to these efforts, government spokesperson George Charamba highlighted the potential economic benefits that these returnees bring with them. Many are equipped with valuable skills acquired during their time in South Africa, particularly in the horticulture sector. This influx of expertise is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening Zimbabwe’s economic landscape and enhancing its export capabilities, aligning with the country’s strategic goals for economic growth.
Charamba further noted that Zimbabwe’s economy is currently in a phase of expansion, presenting a host of new opportunities for those coming back. The skills and experiences that the returnees bring could be instrumental in driving progress in various sectors, thereby contributing to the overall development and prosperity of the nation. This optimistic outlook is part of a broader vision to harness the potential of returning citizens as a vital resource for national advancement.
