Starting June 1, 2026, South Africa will implement a digital customs declaration system, mandating online submissions from all travelers entering or leaving the nation. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to modernize border management, aiming to enhance compliance with customs regulations and streamline both travel and trade operations.
Among the significant changes is the requirement for travellers bringing foreign-registered vehicles into South Africa to declare them at entry points and secure a Temporary Import Permit (TIP). This regulation encompasses all foreign vehicles, including those from countries within the Southern African Customs Union (SACU). The TIP permits these vehicles to be legally used within South Africa for up to six months, with the added convenience of multiple entries and exits without needing a new permit each time.
The South African Revenue Service (SARS) underscores that the new Traveler Declaration System is designed to reduce bureaucracy, improve efficiency, and bolster border security. While the system is digital, customs inspections and necessary border checks will persist as part of routine procedures. Importantly, there is no fee for submitting declarations or obtaining the TIP, and travellers can complete the process via the SARS website or mobile app, receiving a reference number for border presentation.
For travellers who may not have completed the online declaration process ahead of their journey, SARS will provide support through digital kiosks and assistance services at border posts. This initiative reflects South Africa’s commitment to modernizing its customs administration and effectively managing the movement of people, goods, and vehicles across its borders. The changes are expected to facilitate legitimate travel while enhancing revenue collection capabilities.
