Xi Jinping Proposes Economic Security Framework for Middle East in Egypt

In a recent meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in Cairo, Chinese President Xi Jinping urged the establishment of a novel security framework for the Middle East. Emphasizing cooperation, dialogue, and respect for national sovereignty, Xi outlined a four-point strategy to bolster regional security collaboration, tackle interconnected conflicts, promote economic growth, and enhance global coordination.

Xi emphasized the necessity for Middle Eastern nations to assume greater responsibility for their security, rejecting the interference of external powers. He highlighted the Palestinian issue as a pivotal component in addressing broader regional tensions. In addition, China expressed its readiness to work with Middle Eastern nations to safeguard international shipping routes, drive economic development, and address the root causes of conflict. Xi reiterated the importance of the United Nations Charter and international law as the bedrock for resolving regional challenges.

A significant portion of the discussions centered on enhancing economic ties between China and Egypt. Xi advocated for increased collaboration in various sectors, including infrastructure, energy, agriculture, communications, electric vehicles, green energy, aerospace, and the digital economy. Over the past 14 years, China has consistently been Egypt’s largest trading partner and primary source of imports, with bilateral trade escalating from $10.21 billion in 2013 to $20.79 billion in 2025.

The two nations formalized their commitment to strengthen their comprehensive strategic partnership by signing over 20 cooperation agreements. These agreements span a range of fields such as artificial intelligence, trade, technology, education, transportation, and industrial supply chains. The joint statement issued by China and Egypt underscores their determination to deepen bilateral relations and foster mutual growth.
