President Trump has terminated all trade negotiations with Canada, accusing the country of interference over an ad critical of his tariffs. The ad featured a 1987 clip of Ronald Reagan .
Trump wrote on truth social that Canada had “fraudulently” used the “fake” ad to try to influence US court decisions. He labeled the move “egregious behavior.”
The ad was launched by Ontario premier Doug Ford to protest the 35% US tariffs on Canadian goods like steel and timber. The ad quotes Reagan warning that “trade barriers hurt every American worker.”
The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation has also condemned the ad, stating the “selective audio” distorts the full meaning of the 1987 speech. The foundation is “reviewing its legal options.”
The halt in talks, confirmed by secretary of state Marco Rubio, jeopardizes a vital economic partnership. Over 75% of Canadian exports are destined for the US market.
