South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is deliberating on the potential reinstatement of General Fannie Masemola as the national police commissioner following the withdrawal of criminal charges against him. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) decided to drop charges related to alleged violations of the Public Finance Management Act, tied to a South African Police Service healthcare tender awarded to Medicare24 Tshwane District.
The decision to withdraw the charges was made after a comprehensive review by the NPA, which concluded that there was insufficient evidence to secure a successful prosecution against Masemola. This review included evaluations by the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption, a case assessment panel, and independent legal counsel.
Despite the withdrawal of charges, Masemola’s suspension remains in place. The final decision on whether he will return to his position as national police commissioner rests with President Ramaphosa, who has acknowledged the NPA’s decision but has not yet made a conclusive judgment.
General Masemola has expressed his readiness to resume his duties following the withdrawal of charges. However, the broader investigation into the Medicare24 contract continues, focusing on other individuals accused of corruption and irregularities.
